A local farmer and a chef realized the potential for a modest and welcoming lodge in Karatu and founded Bougainvillea Safari Lodge. They applied for a loan from the government, and their application was accepted. This 32-room resort in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area was developed soon after. The lodge has strong community ties, and a portion of the income are donated to the local community. All of the personnel are from from the Ethiopian Highlands (the Iraqw tribe), but have lived in Karatu for some time. When we last visited, it was obvious that the staff is extremely proud of the lodge and the degree of community participation.
We had noticed that Bougainvillea Safari Lodge is normally fairly calm on prior occasions, but it seemed rather hectic when we recently came in February 2018. The bungalows are modest, possibly a little worn in spots, but comfy and tidy. The gardens are well-kept, and the pool appears to be quite welcoming. While it may not be the highlight of your trip, it is an excellent option for families and people on a tight budget.
